Welcome to Teckningsmuseet in Laholm

The museum is the only museum of drawings in the Nordic countries. We present exhibitions from both Nordic and international artists, as well as exhibitions from our own collection. The museum’s ambition is to highlight the art of drawing, and function as a forum for both new trends and historical flashbacks. We also arrange various workshops, lectures and conserts, as well as educational activities for schools.

A visit to The Museum of Drawings is also an architectural experience. The museum is accommodated in Laholm’s old fire station, which has gotten a modern and exciting extension facing the river Lagan.

At our lower levels, you will find a drawing studio open for the public and Laholm’s Pottery Museum. Once upon a time, the beaches of river Lagan and their fine potter’s clay turned Laholm into one of the country’s most important potter’s towns. In the museum you find a permanent exhibition with Laholmskeramik (pottery from Laholm) from the 20th century, and temporary exhibitions.

Organisation

The municipality of Laholm runs the museum since 1 Jan 2013. Until then, it was run by Halland Art Museum on behalf of Laholm Municipality, and before then, it was run by the foundation “Teckningsmuseet i Laholm” (Laholm’s Drawing Museum) until 2009.

The foundation is the owner of the museum’s art collection and generously shares it with the museum’s activities. Laholms municipality and Böllerupsakademin (The Böllerup Academy – an association of cultural active people in southern Halland) founded the foundation in the early 1990s.

The Foundation Board is composed of three representatives from Laholm’s Municipality, three from the Böllerup Academy and one member from Halland Art Museum. The chairmanship is appointed by Laholm’s Municipality.

History

Teckningsmuseet

The history of the Museum of Drawings in Laholm begins in 1979, when Björn Rosendal – artist, writer and physician from Laholm – got the idea to start an academy for all art forms. Two years later, on 23 June 1981, he founded Böllerupakademien (The Böllerup Academy) with artist Hardy Strid and musician Ingvar Neuman. Böllerup was the name of the area where Rosendal lived. The name is a relic from when Laholm (and all of Halland) belonged to Denmark, and is known today as the Bölarp nature reserve.

In the spring of 1983, the idea of a museum for drawings was born. In the name of the Böllerup Academy, Rosendal, Strid and Neuman began collecting artwork for a future museum. They wished to highlight drawings – the nerve in the history of visual art and sculptures.

The foundation “Laholm’s Drawing Museum” was established in 1992 with a board consisting of three representatives from the Böllerup Academy, three from Laholm’s Municipality and one from the Museum of Halmstad. The composition of the board gave the municipality transparency in the work, but (apart from that) the foundation was completely independent.

The Museum of Drawings opened 18 June 1992. We were accommodated in premises assigned by the municipality, in the old Town Hall. Teckningsmuseets vänner, a friendship organization, was formed in October the same year. They’ve had a significant impact on the museum’s business. In the year 2000 we changed our name to Teckningsmuseet in Laholm (The Museum of Drawings in Laholm).

The collection of artworks grew over the years and the museum became increasingly overcrowded. In 2004 the work began to rebuild Laholm’s old fire station into a museum of drawings, which opened 3 March 2007 in our new premises at Hästtorget.

From fire station to museum

In 2003, the architect Jörgen Michelsen’s proposal to rebuild the old fire station into a new museum won. The proposal represented a careful restoration of the old cultural building from the 1910s, and also a modern and bright extension facing the river Lagan.

The reconstructed part of the fire station, with an entrance facing Hästtorget (a public square), houses reception, shop and exhibition areas. The extension with its two floors house exhibition halls, a drawing studio and a café.

The construction project was done according to the so-called “Halland model”. The model has been internationally noted for training unemployed construction workers while preserving and restoring cultural and historical buildings. Fortysix women were also trained in carpentry and brick laying throughout the reconstruction of the museum, as the Halland model was combined with a project aiming to increase the share of women within the construction industry.

Architect Jörgen Michelsen

Architect Jörgen Michelsen works in a Nordic, humanistic and functional tradition with “cultivated simplicity” as main goal. He was born in Norway and studied architecture at Kunstakademiets School of Architecture in Copenhagen. After five years of work in Denmark he continued to Sweden, where he eventually established his architectural office in Helsingborg. Jörgen has designed schools, town halls, fire stations, libraries, homes, neighborhoods (and more) all the way from Kiruna in the north to Klagshamn in the south.

 

Laholm’s Pottery Museum

Laholm’s Pottery Museum was privately run until 2003, when Laholm’s Municipality took over operations. The collection was temporarily stored in anticipation of suitable showrooms. Laholm’s Pottery Museum re-opened 8 March 2008 at the lower floor of The Museum of Drawings. The museum displays a permanent exhibition focusing on pottery made in Laholm during the 20th century, as well as a small temporary exhibition on particular themes.

The legal ground for processing can be consent from you (for example from courses or newsletters), agreements, or public interest. You have the right to access and correct your personal data that Laholm’s Municipality processes. As the operations by the municipality also fall under the Freedom of the Press Regulation, Public Access to Information and Secrecy Act and the Archive Act, please note that your rights to correct/delete personal data may (in some cases) be prohibited. Laholm’s Municipality must also follow regulations for disclosing public documents.
